Early decommissioning for two more spruances

Two more Spruance-class destroyers (DDs) have been retired from Navy service ahead of schedule, primarily because they are not equipped with the vertical-launch missile systems that are now standard equipment for most of the Navy's surface combatants and submarines.

The USS Harry W. Hill was decommissioned at Naval Station San Diego, Calif., on 29 May. The ship, named for Adm. Harry W. Hill, a WWII hero, completed nine major deployments to the Western Pacific and Persian Gulf during her I 8-year career, and served in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.
