IN THE LATE 1800s, a blaze of fantastically audacious graphic invention in the world of decorative and applied art spread across the Western world. Called Art Nouveau in England, Style Moderne in France, Jugendstil in Germany and Secessionstil in Austria; critics of the emerging new style coined their own derisive names including: Noodle Style, Metro Style, Tapeworm Style, Lily Style, and others of the sort.
