Energy cooperation is the dominant aspect of expanding relations between China and the Persian Gulf countries. Propelling this is China's increasing reliance on Gulf oil imports. In pursuing its objectives in the Gulf, China has encountered as many challenges as opportunities-in the form of regional crises and conflicts, as well as US pressure. In seeking to balance its geopolitical and economic interests in the Gulf, China has proceeded cautiously and pragmatically.
