INTRODUCTION

Research in water and wastewater microbiology has been focused on two primary areas during the past year. First, because of the increasing acceptance and use of rapid detection techniques (chromogenic substrates and molecular probes) for the detection of traditional indicator and other organisms, much research has focused on the improvement, use, and limitations of these techniques as well as the continued development and improvement of traditional culture media.
