What would Sun Tzu say about the war on terrorism?

Among the 100,000 books the US Army issued before Christmas to educate the troops in the run up to the war in Iraq were copies of Sun Tzu's Art of War. Perhaps, Clausewitz's more intellectually challenging On War has more bearing on the coming conflict, in the eyes of the enemy, if not the West. A copy, after all, was discovered when the Americans entered the Tora Bora complex in search for Osama bin Laden last year.

But it makes sense reading Sun Tzu as well as the seven other military classics that were first collected in the Sung Dynasty (AD 960-1279). Even if the Art of War is more often ...
