Although visual inspection is cost-effective, users of this technique experience certain common problems. For one thing, an inspector's ability to replicate his or her inspection results is often poor. At best, an inspector can only find about 85% of all the defects present in a manufacturing lot. Looking for such defects is similar to looking at the newspaper cartoon that asks you to find ten differences the artist has included in two similar pictures.
