Why community works: The use of Alfred Adler's individual psychology as a foundational theory

The authors assert that the Individual Psychology of Alfred Adler should be used as a foundational theory for student affairs work. The success of community building programs, as suggested by the work of Ernest Boyer and others associated with the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching (1990) is explained using Individual Psychology. The concepts of Individual Psychology are summarized. The six types of community suggested by the Carnegie Commission are then analyzed using the lens of Individual Psychology.
