The Berlioz bicentenary

Hector Berlioz was born at 5pm on 11 December 1803 in La Cote St Andre, Earlier in the year France had declared war on England and that same month had sold Louisiana to the USA. More important was the composition of his Eroica Symphony by Ludwig van Beethoven. Initially the boy had been named Louis Nicolas Hector, but his father had put a line through the middle name. Even his arrival created controversy!

Two hundred years later, on 6 February 2003, we can celebrate the bicentenary of the marriage of Hector's parents, Louis-Joseph and Marie-Antoinette-Josephine Berlioz, ten months before ...
