Dan Rhodes's first novel is hard to fit into a genre. Subtitled 'A Sentimental Journey', it is part jeu d'esprit, part magic realism, part fable, and, in every sense, shaggy dog story. The 'Timoleon Vieta' of the title is an Italian mongrel mutt distinguished by having 'eyes as pretty as a little girl's'. Timoleon Vieta simply wants, perhaps too much for his own good, to be loved. The same goes for Rhodes's well-written but relentlessly frivolous book.
