Some printers see synergy between print and Web sites

"Printing is still the most cost-- effective way to get out mass information," says John Snyder, president of HBP Inc. in Hagerstown.

"But with the incredible digitalization in the printing industry, we started looking at alternative ways to distribute information, both Internet and CD-ROM. For example, HBP created a searchable database on CD-- ROM for a scholarly journal going back to 1940.

"In 1994, we started our Internet group. We felt it was going to be a critical part of our business, and it's a natural extension of what we do."
