It has long seemed to me that the Watergate affair might have been a tragedy but was in fact a farce, so I was not surprised to find myself laughing outright within a page or two of starting this collection of transcripts of the famous tape-recordings: PRESIDENT NIXON: . . . I want the breakin. Hell, they do that. You're to break into the place, rifle the files, and bring them in. (30 June 1971)
