Magnesite is used in various forms and in several applications. These range from small quantities in products, such as cattle feed and antacid treatment for humans and animals, to larger amounts in the form of caustic magnesia for environmental applications. The largest application is in the refractory industry as a dead-burned magnesia.

The main sources of magnesia are from natural magnesium carbonate ore and by recovery from sea water and brines. Smaller quantities are obtained from magnesia-rich mineral ores, such as brucite (magnesium hydroxide), dolomite and other magnesium silicate ...
