Bromine was first produced commercially from native salt brines at Freeport, PA. It was then produced as a byproduct of potash in the Stassfurt salt deposits in Germany discovered in 1858.

In 1889, Herbert H. Dow, founder of Dow Chemical, invented the "blowing-out" process to extract bromine from the brines at Midland, MI, which then became a major source. Bromine production from seawater using this process began in 1934 near Wilimgton, NC and later spread to other locations.
