Astronomers have known since 1994 that a small galaxy orbiting the Milky Way has entered it. Scientists made the discovery unexpectedly while analyzing stars in the concentrated, elliptical bulge at the enter of Earth's galaxy.
They realized that certain stars, which all essentially had the same velocity, were not moving in the proper manner to be in the center of the Milky Way.
