ABSTRACT
A total of 48 high genetic merit (HM) and 48 medium merit (MM) cows, each given a low (LC), medium (MC), or high (HC) level of concentrate supplementation, were used in a split-plot design experiment, which was run in three consecutive years, to evaluate animal production responses. Individual cow intakes were estimated twice each year while at pasture; measurement period 1 (MPI) was in May/June, and measurement period 2 (MP2) was in early September, corresponding on average ...

Monensin for Lactating Dairy Cows Grazing Mixed-Alfalfa Pasture and Supplemented with Partial Mixed Ration
Journal of Dairy Science
; ABSTRACT The effect of monensin on milk production was evaluated in 58 lactating Holstein cows (48 multiparous; 10 primiparous) grazing a mixed-alfalfa pasture and supplemented with a partial mixed ration in a completely randomized design with repeated measurements. Cows were paired by calving

Invited review: Production and digestion of supplemented dairy cows on pasture
Journal of Dairy Science
; ABSTRACT Literature with data from dairy cows on pasture was reviewed to evaluate the effects of supplementation on intake, milk production and composition, and ruminal and postruminal digestion. Low dry matter intake (DMI) of pasture has been identified as a major factor limiting milk production

REVIEW: Monensin for Grazing Dairy Cows
Professional Animal Scientist
; Abstract The results of 14 research studies indicated that grazing dairy cows fed monensin respond similarly in milk yield and milk composition to dairy cows fed in confinement. When compared to controls, grazing cows receiving monensin averaged 0.9 kg/cow per d greater milk production. Milk fat

Supplemental carbohydrates sources for lactating dairy cows on pasture
Journal of Dairy Science
; ABSTRACT Two experiments were conducted to evaluate steam-- flaked corn and nonforage fiber sources as supplemental carbohydrates for lactating dairy cows on pasture. Cows were allotted to a new paddock of an orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.) pasture twice daily in one group in both trials. In

Effects of Silymarin, a Natural Hepatoprotector, in Periparturient Dairy Cows
Journal of Dairy Science
; ABSTRACT Silymarin, a natural acknowledged hepatoprotector used in humans to treat liver diseases, has been tested in dairy cows during peripartum, a period during which animals are subject to subclinical fatty liver. Ten grams of silymarin (76% pure extract consisting in flavonolignans, taxifolin,

Effect of Dietary Phosphorus on Performance of Lactating Dairy Cows: Milk Production and Cow Health*
Journal of Dairy Science
; ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to measure cow response to feeding of two dietary concentrations of P, one of which was close to recent National Research Council requirements, and the other of which was well in excess of the requirement. Diets containing 0.37 or 0.57% P (dry basis) were

The Effect of Concentrate Supplementation on Nutrient Flow to the Omasum in Dairy Cows Receiving Freshly Cut Grass
Journal of Dairy Science
; ABSTRACT An experiment was carried out to determine the effect of increasing the amount of grain-based concentrate (0, 3, or 6 kg/d) on nutrient flow to the omasum, rumen fermentation pattern, milk yield, and nutrient use of dairy cows. Harvested timothy-meadow fescue grass was fed individually 3

Milk Production of Dairy Cows Fed Differing Concentrations of Rumen-Degraded Protein1
Journal of Dairy Science
; ABSTRACT Thirty-two multiparous and 16 primiparous Holstein cows in midlactation averaging 126 d in milk were used to determine the effects of rumen-degraded protein (RDP) concentration on lactation performance. Cows were assigned to diets in a repeated Latin square design with 3-wk experimental

Milk Production of Dairy Cows Fed Total Mixed Rations After a Grazing Period
Professional Animal Scientist
; Abstract Twenty multiparous Holstein cows were used in a completely randomized design with repeated measures to study milk production of cows supplemented or not supplemented with concentrate when they were switched to a total mixed ration (TMR) after grazing. In one group, cows grazed an
