Intermittent enteral nutrition--a comparative study examining the effect on gastric pH and microbial colonization rates
|
SUMMARY
In a prospective randomized study we aimed to examine the effect on gastric pH and microbial colonization of enteral nutrition (EN) delivered both by intermittent and continual infusion. Forty-three mechanically ventilated patients were randomized to receive EN by one of three methods, intermittent or continual gastric or continual jejunal. We sampled gastric aspirate for pH and culture in all patients at 0600 hours and pH in gastric intermittent feeders at 2200 hours daily. P...

Pneumonia in Intensive Care-Another Frontier?
Anaesthesia and Intensive Care
; Pneumonia is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in intensive care. Three types of pneumonia are relevant to intensive care. These are community-acquired, hospital-acquired and ventilator-associated pneumonia. The latter two types of pneumonia are nosocomial in nature and at least in part

Data Linkage Enables Evaluation of Long-Term Survival After Intensive Care
Anaesthesia and Intensive Care
; SUMMARY Outcomes of intensive care are important to the patient and for assessment of benefit. Short-term outcomes after critical illness are well described, but less is known about long-term outcomes. This study describes the use of data linkage, combining intensive care unit (ICU) clinical data

Outcome-based Clinical Indicators for Intensive Care Medicine
Anaesthesia and Intensive Care
; SUMMARY The clinical indicator is a tool used to monitor the quality of health care. Its use in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is desirable for many reasons: the maintenance of minimum standards, the development of best practice and the delivery of cost-effective health care. The utility of clinical

Antibiotic Resistance in the Intensive Care Unit: A Primer in Bacteriology
Anaesthesia and Intensive Care
; SUMMARY The clinical use of potent, well-tolerated, broad-spectrum antibiotics has been paralleled by the development of resistance in bacteria, and the prevalence of highly resistant bacteria in some intensive care units is despairingly commonplace. The intensive care community faces the realistic
