The Coal and Energy Division Distinguished Service Award is presented to John N. Murphy in recognition of his achievements in the coal mining industry.

Murphy is a research professor in the department of chemical and petroleum engineering and associate director of the McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine. His technical focus is on occupational health and safety in academic laboratories and for small businesses.
