US coal production totaled a record high of 987.6 Mt (1.09 billion st) in 1997, up by 2.3% from 1996, according to preliminary data from the Energy Information Administration (Table 1). The electric power industry (utilities and independent power producers) are the dominant coal consumer. They used a record 836.4 Mt (922 million st), up 2.8% from 1996. The increase in coal use for electricity generation was attributable primarily to a substantial decline in nuclear-powered generation and moderate growth in electricity demand.
