A Dartmouth University researcher has taken a molecular approach to the problem to de-icing airplane wings by applying electric voltage across an ice/metal interface, breaking the bond between ice and metal surfaces.

Dr. Victor Petrenko believes it may be possible to prevent or significantly reduce icing on the wings of an airplane using a unit "no larger than a car battery."
