United States ratification of the convention on the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women

I. INTRODUCTION

The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW or Convention) was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on December 18, 1979.1 It was opened for signature on March 1, 1980, and entered into force on September 3, 1981,(2) when it had been ratified by twenty states, as provided for by Article 27 of the Convention.3 It is the most comprehensive Convention dealing with women's rights.4 As of October 7, 1997, it has been ratified by 161 states.5
