Sexual-orientation protection added to New York law

SYRACUSE-Last month, Gov. George Pataki signed legislation adding sexual orientation to the state's human rights, civil fights, and education laws.

The Sexual Orientation NonDiscrimination Act (SONDA) prohibits discrimination in housing, employment, credit, and public accommodation. SONDA doesn't affect the legal status of same-sex unions or extend insurance benefits to domestic partners. The act also leaves untouched religious exemptions in the human-rights law. New York is the thirteenth state to enact anti-discrimination measures based on sexual orientation.
