The 1972 International Congress on Accounting in Sydney was held at a time of a new social and political era for Australia - and served as a pointer to the future for the accounting profession.

Peter Agars, a President of the Australian Society of Accountants and the first Australian to be President of the International Federation of Accountants, believed that the profession started to grow up in Australia in the 1970s.
