Too often, the possibility of adding another component to a mixture to enhance relative volatility is not considered. Yet, it can be a potent and economic option.

In the history of chemical separations, conventional distillation has been used in more commercial applications than all other techniques combined. This well-known operation takes advantage of the difference in boiling points of chemical compounds, and is suitable for separating a variety of compounds.
