In the early part of the century, Ignaz Goldziher contrasted the independence of Muslim thinkers in the Subcontinent with the relative conservatism of those of the Middle East, attributing the difference to the more prolonged and direct encounter with Europeans.1 Since then, the special contribution of South Asian thinkers to modern Muslim intellectual history has been widely recognized.
