Introduction

The Shiite tradition in South Asia is so variegated, and the geographical area involved so extensive, that a brief essay must necessarily be restricted in those aspects of the topic that it treats. In this article I have chosen to focus primarily on the Ithna (Ashari ("Twelver") denomination (the form of Islam to which most Shi as adhere) within the setting of India (where I have been studying Muharram liturgical observances for the past several years).
