Nel prologo ambientato durante la Prima guerra mondiale assistiamo all'uccisione di un soldato tedesco che si avvicina arrendendosi con le mani alzate da parte del sergente Possum/Lee Marvin. Quest'ultimo uccide il nemico non sapendo che poche ore prima è stata proclamata la fine della guerra; nel finale, lo stesso Sergente affronta nuovamente un soldato tedesco (questa volta a finire è la Seconda guerra mondiale), lo ferisce ma non lo uccide.
