Chemotherapy has been employed in the treatment of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma since the 1970s. Since the advent of platinum-based treatments in the 1980s,1 complete response rates of 25% to 30% and partial response rates of 28% to 54% have been reported (Table I).2"7 The relative chemosensitivity of these tumors led to the seminal study by the Veterans Administration that attained a larynx preservation rate of 64% for laryngeal carcinoma by using a regimen of induction chemotherapy followed by radiotherapy for responders.2 Since that time, other nonsurgical organ preservation ...
