Five great archipelagos, 118 islands

111 The Society Islands form the largest of the archipelagos (nine islands and five atolls), and fall into two groups -- the Leeward Islands and the Windward Islands.

To the north of the Society Islands lie the Tuamotu and Marquesas islands, to the south the Australes and at the eastern extremity, the Gambier archipelago.

Settlers from Southeast Asia are thought to be the first to arrive in the region, around 300 AD, in the Marquesas Islands, and by 800 AD in the Society Islands. Prior to the first European contact, the islands were ruled by a hierarchy of hereditary tribal chiefs.
