DARWIN'S FIRST CLUES (Cover Story), by David Quammen (Page 34) In a story marking the bicentennial of Charles Darwin's birth, David Quammen notes that Darwin's journey toward the concept of evolution began not in the Gal�pagos but three years before, on a blustery beach along the north coast of Argentina. Never mind the notion of Darwin's finches. His first real clue about evolution wasn't even a living creature. It was a trove of fossils of armadillos and sloths.
