Propylthiouracil: Liver failure: case report
|
A 19-year-old woman developed liver failure after receiving propylthiouracil for Graves' disease. She subsequently died.
The woman was initiated on propylthiouracil treatment [dosage not stated], without ongoing monitoring of liver function tests. Three months later, she presented with nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and jaundice. Her liver function tests demonstrated a total bilirubin level of 6.5 mg/dL, an AST level of 1747 U/L and an ALT level of 1589 U/L.
