Occupational therapists working in schools should be prepared to participate in the long-term care of children with burns. A review of the statistics reveals that burn injuries are prevalent among children, especially those with disabilities (Safe Kids Worldwide, 2005). Additionally, children are prone to develop long-term complications years after a burn injury because they are still growing, and scars grow more slowly than the surrounding healthy tissue (Ross & Krilov, 1992; Waymack, Fidler, & Warden, 1988).
