In an article published in the June 15 issue of the International Journal of Cancer (2008;122:2726-2734), Busk et al. from the Aarhus University Hospital (Denmark) reported on an investigation of the potential of oxygenresponsive genes and ^sup 18^F-FDG PET as markers of tissue hypoxia. In in vitro studies, the authors characterized glycolytic and mitochondrial ATP generation in normoxic and anoxic cells to explore the consequences of elevated aerobic glycolysis in tumors (Warburg effect).
