Perioperative catecholamine use and adverse cardiac outcomes

Perioperative catecholamine use in heart surgery may be associated with an increased risk of postoperative adverse cardiac outcomes, according to results from a prospective nonrandomised cohort study.

Of the 657 patients who met the inclusion criteria, 84 patients received catecholamines intraoperatively and/or within 48 hours of cardiopulmonary bypass and were included in the 'catecholamine group'. The remaining 573 patients were included in the control group. In the catecholamine group, 89% of the patients received a low dobutamine dose for a short postoperative period.
