The Mississippi Department of Education issued the following news release:

One particular incident stands out in Silvana Caruso Newkirk's mind when she is asked about how her young students at Waveland Elementary are retaining the Italian she teaches.

"I drew a gatto, cat, and pesce, fish, and I said, 'OK, now what is this?'" said Newkirk, who was born in Sicily, Italy and moved to the United States in 1989. "This 6-year-old boy stood up and said, 'It's a compound, a gatto-pesce, catfish!' So, I called him my little gatto-pesce all year. They are all so brilliant."
