GREAT WALL OF CHINA -- It's over 6,000 kilometres long and, at its peak, was once guarded with over a million men. Could use them these days to keep out the tourists.
But the Great Wall has long since lost its purpose as a shield against the invading Mongolian forces, and now is lined with souvenir hawkers who will sell you anything, even if it barks.
"Give you! Give you!" urges one vender, when a stranger from Winnipeg picks up a small black puppy dog not much bigger than his palm.
But you buy a painted scroll of a tiger instead -- less paperwork at Customs -- and move on ...
