Abstract Polymorphic variation in two cytokine genes, tumor necrosis factor (TNF) -alpha and -beta, was examined in three ethnic groups, the Bugis, the Makassans, and the Torajans, who inhabit Sulawesi, a large island in the Indonesian archipelago, and formerly a Dutch colony.
