Epoxy resin system automatically seals holes and cracks in aircraft even while in the air

A TECHNIQUE that mimics healing processes in nature could enable damaged aircraft to mend themselves automatically, even during a flight, engineering researchers at Bristol University have claimed.

The technique has the potential to improve aviation safety and make it possible to design lighter aeroplanes with lower fuel costs.

The researchers reckon that if a tiny hole or crack appears in a composite aircraft structure, from wear and tear, fatigue or a stone striking the plane, an epoxy resin can be ...
