The United States relies on imports for nearly all of the bauxite it consumes. Small amounts of bauxite and bauxitic clays are produced in Alabama, Arkansas and Georgia for nonmetallurgical uses.
Metallurgical-grade (crude dry) bauxite imports in 2007 totaled 9.84 Mt (10.84 million st), 15 percent less than the quantity imported in 2006. The decline in imports likely was because of the temporary closure of Ormet's refinery at Burnside, LA at the end of 2006 that continued throughout 2007.
