Coal, limestone, clay, sand and gravel are mined in Kentucky. Kentucky has been one of the top three coal-producing states in the nation for more than 50 years. Coal is primarily used by electric power plants and industrial markets. Bituminous coal is mined from Pennsylvanian strata in the western and eastern parts of the state. The Western Kentucky Coal Field is part of the Illinois, or Eastern Interior, Basin. The Eastern Kentucky Coal Field is part of the central Appalachian Basin.
