ABSTRACT
The experimental objective was to determine the effects of feeding prepubertal dairy heifers a high-energy diet for 3,6, or 12 wk on mammary growth and composition. Holstein heifers (age = 11 wk; body weight = 107 ± 1 kg) were assigned to 1 of 4 treatments (n = 16/ treatment). The treatment period lasted 12 wk and treatments were H0 (low-energy diet fed for 12 wk, with no weeks on the high-energy diet); H3 (low-energy diet fed for 9 wk, followed by the high-energy diet for 3 ...

Effect of Pregnancy and Extended Lactation on Milk Production in Dairy Goats Milked Once Daily
Journal of Dairy Science
; ABSTRACT Thirty multiparous Murciano-Granadina dairy goats milked once daily were used to study the lactational effects of an extended 24-mo kidding interval (K24; n = 14) compared with the traditional 12-mo kidding interval (K12; n = 16). Goats were divided into 2 groups at wk 29 of lactation

Developmental Changes in the Kinetics of Glucose and Urea in Holstein Calves
Journal of Dairy Science
; ABSTRACT Because weaning is the point when the nutrient composition of feed changes for the neonatal ruminant, the present experiment was conducted to assess the developmental changes in the kinetics of glucose and urea over this period, using stable isotopes of glucose and urea, at 4, 13, and 24

Bone growth rather than myofibrillar protein turnover is strongly affected by nutritional restriction at early weaning of calves
The Journal of Nutrition
; Weaning at less than 5 wk of age (so-called early weaning) causes qualitative and quantitative changes in nutrients available to young ruminants. For example, proteins are mainly supplied by milk or milk replacer during the suckling period, but in the forms of both microbial protein synthesized in
