Bluesman Watermelon Slim, who will be appearing at this year's Jazz Winnipeg Festival, was the big winner at the 2008 Blues Music Awards, held Thursday night in Tunica, Miss.

Watermelon Slim -- whose real name is Bill Homans -- received the album of the year award for his latest recording, The Wheel Man. And his band, Watermelon Slim & the Workers, was named band of the year.

For the second year in a row, Homans had been nominated in six categories.

The winners were selected by the vote of members of the Blues Foundation.
