ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of daily herbage allowance (DHA) and concentrate level on milk production and dry matter intake of spring-calving dairy cows in early lactation. Seventy-two Holstein-Friesian dairy cows (mean calving date February 2) were randomly assigned across 6 treatments (n = 12) in a 2 × 3 factorial arrangement. The 6 treatments consisted of 2 DHA (>4 cm) and 3 concentrate levels: 13 kg of herbage dry matter/cow per d (low) or 1...

The Effect of Early-Lactation Feeding Strategy on the Lactation Performance of Spring-Calving Dairy Cows
Journal of Dairy Science ; ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to establish the influence of daily herbage allowance (DHA) and supplementation level offered to spring-calving dairy cows in early lactation on animal performance throughout lactation. Sixty-six Holstein-Friesian dairy cows were randomly assigned to a
The Effect of Concentrate Supplementation on Nutrient Flow to the Omasum in Dairy Cows Receiving Freshly Cut Grass
Journal of Dairy Science ; ABSTRACT An experiment was carried out to determine the effect of increasing the amount of grain-based concentrate (0, 3, or 6 kg/d) on nutrient flow to the omasum, rumen fermentation pattern, milk yield, and nutrient use of dairy cows. Harvested timothy-meadow fescue grass was fed individually 3
Concentrate Supplementation Reduces Postprandial Plasma Ghrelin in Grazing Dairy Cows: A Possible Neuroendocrine Basis for Reduced Pasture Intake in Supplemented Cows
Journal of Dairy Science ; ABSTRACT Ghrelin is an endogenous ligand of the growth hormone secretagogue receptor, and a potent orexigenic agent in human and rodent studies. We hypothesized that ghrelin may play a role in the reduced grazing time in dairy cows receiving supplementary feeds. Fifty-eight Holstein-Friesian (HF)
Invited review: Production and digestion of supplemented dairy cows on pasture
Journal of Dairy Science ; ABSTRACT Literature with data from dairy cows on pasture was reviewed to evaluate the effects of supplementation on intake, milk production and composition, and ruminal and postruminal digestion. Low dry matter intake (DMI) of pasture has been identified as a major factor limiting milk production
Influence of phosphorus intake on excretion and blood plasma and saliva concentrations of phosphorus in dairy cows
Journal of Dairy Science ; ABSTRACT Phosphorus (P) balance, and blood plasma P and saliva P concentrations were measured in multiparous dairy cows through two lactations and two dry periods. The cows were fed three amounts of P at either 100, 80 or 67% of the Dutch P recommendation, actually resulting in dietary P
REVIEW: Monensin for Grazing Dairy Cows
Professional Animal Scientist ; Abstract The results of 14 research studies indicated that grazing dairy cows fed monensin respond similarly in milk yield and milk composition to dairy cows fed in confinement. When compared to controls, grazing cows receiving monensin averaged 0.9 kg/cow per d greater milk production. Milk fat

Journal of Dairy Science ; Propionibacteria Fed to Dairy Cows: Effects on Energy Balance, Plasma Metabolites and Hormones, and Reproduction1 ABSTRACT To determine the effect of feeding Propionibacteria on energy balance, milk yield, and composition, metabolites and hormones of early-lactating dairy cows, multiparous Holstein
Effects of Silymarin, a Natural Hepatoprotector, in Periparturient Dairy Cows
Journal of Dairy Science ; ABSTRACT Silymarin, a natural acknowledged hepatoprotector used in humans to treat liver diseases, has been tested in dairy cows during peripartum, a period during which animals are subject to subclinical fatty liver. Ten grams of silymarin (76% pure extract consisting in flavonolignans, taxifolin,
Varying Protein and Starch in the Diet of Dairy Cows. I. Effects on Ruminal Fermentation and Intestinal Supply of Nutrients
Journal of Dairy Science ; ABSTRACT The main objective of this experiment was to examine the effects of the percentage and source of crude protein (CP) and the amount of starch in the diet of dairy cows on ruminai fermentation, nutrient passage to the small intestine, and nutrient digestibility. For this purpose, 6
Soyhulls as an alternative feed for lactating dairy cows: A review
Journal of Dairy Science ; ABSTRACT Dairy producers use soyhulls, a byproduct of soybean processing, to replace either grain or forage in diets of lactating dairy cows. In view of the nutritional and economical value of soyhulls it is anticipated that this practice will continue to increase in popularity among nutritionists
