IN 1977 I PUBLISHED the first results of my research on the translation of Ben Sira from Hebrew into Syriac.1 Internal evidence in the Syriac version indicates that it was a two-stage process and that the authors of those stages betray their identity by alterations to the Hebrew that are so numerous and clear that they must have been deliberate.21 identified some forty major alterations and half a dozen minor changes.
