ABSTRACT
We characterize the function of MHC molecules by the sets of pathogens that they recognize, which we call their "recognition sets." Two features of the MHC-pathogen interaction may be important to the theory of polymorphism construction at MHC loci: First, there may be a large degree of overlap, or degeneracy, among the recognition sets of MHC molecules. Second, when infected with a pathogen, an MHC genotype may have a higher fitness if that pathogen belongs to the overlapping...

Annett's theory that individuals heterozygous for the right shift gene are intellectually advantaged: theoretical and empirical problems. (comment on an article by Marian Annett in this issue, p.511)
British Journal of Psychology
; In the past few years, Marian Annett and her colleagues have published several papers relating handedness to cognitive ability (Annett, 1991a; Annett & Manning, 1989; 1990a, b). In these studies, Annett has shown that strongly right-handed individuals, as measured by her peg-moving task

Did an HIV-like virus ravage early chimps? (Chimp Change).
Science News
; Two million years ago, chimpanzees experienced a drastic loss of variability in certain genes that help them fight viruses, a new study reports. Widespread infection with an HIV-like virus may have pruned from the species individual chimps with some of these immunity genes, the study's authors

Failure to support the right-shift theory's hypothesis of a `heterozygote advantage' for cognitive abilities.
British Journal of Psychology
; Annett's 'right-shift theory' is the most prominent theory of language lateralization and handedness (Annett, 1985, 1992, 1995). The theory posits a single autosomal gene, labelled the right-shift (rs+) gene, that causes the left hemisphere to become specialized for speech and language. Persons

Pinning down T cell death in the thymus. (opoptosis as well as cell birth occurs in thymus) (Brief Article)
Science News
; Though an inconspicuous organ located behind the breastbone, the thymus is the place where the immune system makes peace with the rest of the body. Here, white cells called T cells -- key soldiers in the body's cellular army -- proliferate and mature. But if all these soldiers were allowed to roam

Single-Locus Polymorphism in a Heterogeneous Two-Deme Model
Genetics
; ABSTRACT Environmental heterogeneity has long been considered a likely explanation for the high levels of genetic variation found in most natural populations: selection in a spatially heterogeneous environment can maintain more variation. While this theoretical result has been extensively studied

Evolution of Fitnesses and Allele Frequencies in a Population With Spatially Heterogeneous Selection Pressures
Genetics
; ABSTRACT The level of gene flow considerably influences the outcome of evolutionary processes in structured populations with spatial heterogeneity in selection pressures; low levels of gene flow may allow local adaptation whereas high levels of gene flow may oppose this process thus preventing the

What good is the cystic fibrosis gene?(research suggests mutant ctr gene may protect against typhoid fever)(Brief Article)
Science News
; A significant puzzle surrounding cystic fibrosis is its prevalence. The fatal respiratory disease results when a person has mutations in both of the body's copies of a gene called cftr. Yet even though in the past the disease killed people before they had reproduced and passed on their genes, about

The cystic fibrosis heterozygote advantage: a snythesis of ideas
