ABSTRACT

This study investigated cow characteristics, farm facilities, and herd management strategies during the dry period to examine their joint influence on somatic cell counts (SCC) in early lactation. Data from 52 commercial dairy farms throughout England and Wales were collected over a 2-yr period. For the purpose of analysis, cows were separated into those housed for the dry period (6,419 cow-dry periods) and those at pasture (7,425 cow-dry periods). Bayesian multilevel models w...

The efficacy of intramammar tilmicosin at drying-off, and other risk factors for preventing of new intramammary infections during the dry period
Journal of Dairy Science ; ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to compare the efficacy of an intramammary infusion, containing tilmicosin phosphate, to an infusion of a negative control intramammary placebo for preventing new intramammary infections (IMI) during the dry period. Cows were enrolled from 24 dairy herds
Cow, Farm, and Management Factors During the Dry Period that Determine the Rate of Clinical Mastitis After Calving
Journal of Dairy Science ; ABSTRACT The purpose of the research was to investigate cow characteristics, farm facilities, and herd management strategies during the dry period to examine their joint influence on the rate of clinical mastitis after calving. Data were collected over a 2-yr period from 52 commercial dairy farms
Milk production of dairy cows treated with estrogen at the onset of a short dry period
Journal of Dairy Science ; Milk Production of Dairy Cows Treated With Estrogen at the Onset of a Short Dry Period1 ABSTRACT The objective was to determine whether the use of estradiol-17beta (E^sub 2^) at the initiation of short dry periods prevented an anticipated decline in milk production in the subsequent lactation.
Effects of Photoperiod During the Dry Period on Prolactin, Prolactin Receptor, and Milk Production of Dairy Cows
Journal of Dairy Science ; ABSTRACT Cows exposed to short day photoperiod during the dry period produce significantly more milk in their subsequent lactation than cows exposed to long days. The mechanism(s) underlying this effect are unknown. Because concentrations of prolactin (PRL) in circulation are consistently affected
Influence of dry period bacterial intramammary infection on clinical mastitis in dairy cows
Journal of Dairy Science ; ABSTRACT Milk samples were taken from 1920 quarters (480 cows, six herds) on four occasions to examine the relationship between quarter level intramammary infection (IMI) during the dry period and clinical mastitis in the next lactation. All quarters were sampled at drying off and within 1 wk of
Dry Period Length in US Jerseys: Characterization and Effects on Performance
Journal of Dairy Science ; ABSTRACT The objectives of this research were to characterize dry period lengths for US Jerseys, determine the effects of days dry (DD) on subsequent lactation actual milk, fat, and protein yields, fat and protein percentages, somatic cell score (SCS), and days open (DO), and to determine the dry
Evaluation of the efficacy of an internal teat sealer during the dry period
Journal of Dairy Science ; ABSTRACT The efficacy of an internal dry period teat sealer containing bismuth subnitrate (Product A; Teatseal, Cross Vetpharm Group Ltd, Ireland) was compared with a long-acting antibiotic preparation containing cephalonium (Product B; Cepravin Dry Cow, Schering-Plough Ltd, UK), by assessing the
Genetic parameters for milk somatic cell scores and relationships with production traits in French Lacaune dairy sheep
Journal of Dairy Science ; ABSTRACT Records from 94,445 and 45,499 French Lacaune dairy ewes in first and second lactations, respectively, were used to estimate genetic parameters for somatic cell scores. Somatic cell count data came from an extensive recording scheme and sample testing that began in 1999 using the flocks
Dry Period Length to Maximize Production Across Adjacent Lactations and Lifetime Production
Journal of Dairy Science ; ABSTRACT The primary objectives of this research were to determine the dry period lengths that maximize production across adjacent lactations and also dry period length that maximizes lifetime yield. Effect of days dry (DD) after lactations 1 through 3 were determined separately for both adjacent
Differences important in assessing linear scores vs. somatic cell count
DVM ; Production of quality milk is an important management factor on dairy farms. Even smaller herds can be losing $10,000 or more when subclinical infections exist in a large proportion of the herd. These losses come from reduced production, lost quality bonuses, increased clinical mastitis and
