ABSTRACT
Molecular mimicry is a recurrent theme in host defense processes. The correlation of functional mimicry with the structural features of the antibody paratope has been investigated, addressing the consequences of mimicry in host immune mechanisms. Two anti-mannopyranoside antibodies, 1H7 and 2D10, representing the possible extremes of the recognition spectrum with regard to peptide-carbohydrate mimicry were examined. Crystallographic and molecular dynamics simulation analyses e...

Molecular mimicry in autoimmune pancreatitis: an interesting idea
Journal of Cellular and Molecular Medicine
; Autoimmune pancreatitis is an inflammatory process of the pancreas that is caused due to an autoimmune mechanism establishing etiology of chronic pancreatitis [1]. It is characterized by the presence of autoantibodies, hypergammaglobulinemia, pancreatic enlargement, pancreatic duct strictures, and

Microbial trigger for autoimmunity? (interleukin-12)
Science News
; If suffering through a cold or the flu weren't bad enough by itself, a new study hints at the existence of a mechanism by which microbial infections may inflame or even initiate autoimmune disorders such as multiple sclerosis. Autoimmune disorders are one of the continuing mysteries of immunology.

Helicobacter pylori and autoimmune pancreatitis: role of carbonic anhydrase via molecular mimicry?
Journal of Cellular and Molecular Medicine
; Abstract Autoimmune pancreatitis is a recently defined nosological entity, which accounts for 4.6-6% of all forms of chronic pancreatitis and is often associated with other autoimmune diseases, particularly Sjgren's syndrome. Possession of the HLA DRB1*0405-DQB1*0401 genotype confers a risk for the

HIV Drugs Produced from Goats Show Promise
Biopharm International
; Molecular mimicry is a common, but undesirable, property of disease proteins. Sequence similarities between cancer proteins and self-proteins allow tumor cells to hide, thereby avoiding attack from the immune system. HIV uses the same evasive tactic. In the early 1990s, Dr. Frank Gelder (then
