Rare surgery makes 'cloaca' baby normal

NEW DELHI, India, March 19 -- DOCTORS OF paediatric surgery of CSMMU Dr Ashish Wakhlu and Dr Dheeraj Parihar have performed a rare operation on a two-year-old girl who had a common opening for stool, urine and the genital passage and no anus at birth.

The doctors claimed this combination of procedures (coloplasty with cloaca) was perhaps first of its kind in the country.

Prof Anita Malik and her team administered anaesthesia for over six-hour surgery. The baby is presently recovering in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit in the supervision of Prof Y C Govil.
