ABSTRACT

Preweaning data on 511 spring-born calves from 187 Brangus cows and 129 Bonsmara, Brangus, Charolais, Gelbvieh, Hereford, and Romosinuano sires were measured over a 4-yr period to determine sire breed, sex, and age of dam differences under 2 preweaning forage environments: 1) native tallgrass rangeland (native) or 2) improved warm-season forages (improved). Sire breed differences in birth weight varied across forage (P < 0.05) with Romosinuano-sired calves on improved forag...

Evaluating Texel-, Suffolk-, and Columbia-Sired Offspring: II. Postweaning Growth and Carcass Traits Under Feedlot and Pasture-Feedlot Finishing Systems1
Professional Animal Scientist ; Abstract A terminal sire study was conducted to evaluate postweaning growth and carcass traits of Texel-sired offspring compared with Suffolk- and Columbia-sired offspring. The lambs were weaned at an average age of 70 and 94 d during the 2-yr study, respectively. After weaning, lambs from each
Comparison of Longhorn- and Red Poll-Sired Calves from Crossbred Dams Calving at Two or Three Years of Age1
Professional Animal Scientist ; Abstract Calving difficulty, survival from birth to weaning, birth weight, and weaning weight of 167 calves and carcass traits of 88 cattle (63 for adjusted fat thickness) were compared for progeny of Red Poll and Longhom bulls mated to crossbred cows that calved at 2 or 3 yr of age. Genetic Evaluations for Mixed-Breed Populations
Journal of Dairy Science ; ABSTRACT An all-breed animal model was developed for routine genetic evaluations of US dairy cattle.
