MADAM C.J. WALKER was born Sarah Breedlove on December 23, 1867, on a Delta, Louisiana, plantation, the daughter of freed slaves. Orphaned at age seven, she and her older sister survived by working in the cotton fields of Delta, and later by taking in washing. After marriage, the birth of her only daughter, Lelia (later known as A'Lelia), and the death of her husband, she joined her brothers in St. Louis and, working for as little as $1.50 a day, managed to save enough money to educate her daughter.
