Happy 400th Birthday, Monteverdi!
Jonathan Mills, the Edinburgh Festival's new Director-who comes to the Scots Capital from Melbourne, Australia-decided for his first season to salute Claudio Monteverdi and his early opera L'Orfeo. As Monteverdi and his compatriot composers and librettists were fascinated by the ancient Greek myths, this permitted Mills to revisit the classical past as well as the Italian renaissance.
